Confidentiality

Confidentiality is naturally a common concern when considering whether to be tested and where to go for a test. This may arise from a fear of disclosure in terms of job or insurance applications or the effect on your family and relationships for example.

Most GUM (Genito-Urinary Medicine) clinics and drug agencies offer confidential testing. However, if the test is performed through your GP they may be obliged to divulge information, for example, in instances where they are asked for a medical examination. However, you would need to give your permission for this.

Anonymous/confidential testing is offered at different units across the UK, search our UK Directory of Hepatitis Services to find one near you. There are advantages and disadvantages to this:

Some Advantages

Anonymous testing enables you to identify if you are positive or negative for Hepatitis C without the worry of disclosure to third parties eg. potentially insurance companies.

Some Disadvantages

Your GP is typically your first point of contact with healthcare. It is important for them to know of any significant factor affecting your health.

Although you can still be referred to a specialist, an anonymous test also prevents your GP from supporting and helping you. This could be while you are waiting for a specialist appointment or between appointments.
