Blood Spills

All blood and body fluids spills should be treated as potentially infectious at all times.

Dry blood spills and fresh blood spills should both be treated with caution and cleaned-up as soon as possible by following 4 simple steps:

  1. Clean and cover your cut/wound with a water proof plaster first to stop further bleeding. If someone is helping you do this ensure they wear rubber gloves. Dispose of any soiled articles carefully in a bin.
  2. Put on a pair of rubber gloves to protect your hand even if it is your own blood.
  3. Mop up excess blood with disposable kitchen roll, paper towels or tissues and dispose of these carefully in the bin.
  4. Cover the blood stained area or blood spot with undiluted bleach or Milton . Leave it there for 10 minutes to kill off any virus. Mop up the bleach or Milton carefully using disposable kitchen roll, paper towels or tissues. Dispose of these carefully in the bin once more.

The steps above should be followed by yourself and anyone helping you.
